Adelaide United produced a dramatic comeback to beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night after Dane Johan Absalonsen smashed home the winner in extra time.
In a spectacular game, it looked like Brisbane Roar had done enough to claim their first A-League victory of the season following Massimo Maccarone’s early goal.
In his debut appearance, Roar’s marquee signing buried Corey Brown’s left wing cross past Michael Theo and into the back of the net after 8 minutes of play.
Reds were chasing shadows during the opening 10 minutes of the game but almost equalised just before the break had Theo not pounced on the ball just in time.
The pressure was on in the latter stages of the game and things got a bit feisty, with a few yellow cards being handed out.
In the 84th minute the Reds brought on Ryan Kitto and 4 minutes after he leveled the score with a ball that touched Theo’s hands but smashed straight through into the bottom back corner of the net.
Just minutes later and the ball fell to Absalonsen who powerfully blasted a sensational effort in off the crossbar from a tight angle to snatch a thrilling win.
“I think we were the best team after 1-1 and also after the first half in the second half we were the best team,” a delighted Absalonsen said after the match.
“It’s a deserved win but also a quality performance from the team. A perfect performance.
“It’s always difficult two matches on the road in a row but now we have four points and that’s a performance we can be proud of.”
The result means Roar have yet to register a point after back-to-back losses, including a 2-0 defeat to Melbourne City. While the Reds are currently on four points with a draw and a win on the road.
