Round 27 of the Hyundai A-League kicked off on Friday with a match between Melbourne Victory and Central Coast Mariners that ended 1-0 to the homeside at AAMI Park.
Despite Victory enjoying the majority of possession the game looked to end goalless which would have left them in the danger zone, but with 10 minutes left on the clock, Berisha Besart stepped up to score the crucial goal.
After initially missing with a swing from a James Troisi cross, the striker put away Jai Ingham’s cross from directly in front of Izzo’s goal.
This was Berisha’s 100th A-League goal in 156 games and with two clubs, netting 48 for Brisbane Roar and 52 for Victory.
On Saturday Sydney FC were crowned A-League Premiers at Allianz Stadium after a 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets.
In doing so they amassed the greatest points tally in the competition’s history, with 66 points for this season eclipsing the previous record of 65 set by Brisbane in 2011 in three more games.
The deadlock was broken in the 56th minute through Milos Ninkovic who tapped in Filip Holosko’s cross. Alex Brosque sealed the result in the 87th minute as Carney’s flick-on header falls to him at the back post and he volleys into the corner!
Saturday’s other game between Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw at Coopers Stadium.
Adelaide had a two-goal half-time lead following a 10th minute penalty from Marcelo Carrusca and a 38th minute goal from Dylan McGowan.
Steven Lustica crashed a free kick against the crossbar in the 64th minute before Dimas headed home the rebound for the Wanderers.
Lustica then got on the score sheet himself taking picking out the bottom corner in a penalty shot and sending Galekovic the wrong way. Wanderers dominated the final 10 minutes but were unable to carve out any clear chances.
