Western Sydney Wanderers put an end to Brisbane Roar’s four-match unbeaten run to reclaim sixth spot on the Hyundai A-League table, while Melbourne City edged Central Coast, on Saturday.
The first match ended in a 3-0 victory for the Wanderers against Brisbane Roar at ANZ Stadium, the 3 points moving them ahead of the Roar and Perth Glory.
However the side are from safe of securing a place in the finals and depending on next week’s result between Perth and Brisbane, the Wanderers may still need to win their match at home to Adelaide next weekend.
After a disappointing loss against Melbourne Victory the previous week, the Wanderers put on their best performance this season during the first half of this game. Ultimately proving to be too strong for the Roar.
All 3 goals were scored during the opening 45 minutes. Oriol Riera opened the scoring in the 4th minute and scored another 11 minutes later, whilst Chris Ikonomidis added another 5 minutes before the break.
Meanwhile Bruno Fornaroli found the back of the net to give Melbourne City a 1-0 victory over Central Coast Mariners at AAMI Park on Saturday night.
The Uruguayan star has missed much of the A-League season due to a calf injury but has now scored four goals in their past five games.
The win ensured City won’t finish lower than fourth heading into the finals and it also handed the club a play-off spot for next season’s Asian Champions League (ACL).
Fornaroli missed a first half chance thanks to a strong save by keeper Dean Bouzanis, he also missed a stellar opportunity to seal the result with six minutes remaining, but once again Bouzanis stopped his efforts after going one-on-one.
But Fornaroli’s goal in the 49th minute came after Scott Jamieson sent in a low left foot cross to Fornaroli at the top of the box where he turned, flicked up the ball and struck his low volley into the bottom left corner of the goal.
